[D] 2D1N SUKAU KINABATANGAN WILDLIFE SAFARI (ex Sandakan)

Day 1 Sepilok Orangutan - Safari Kinabatangan River
(Lunch, Dinner)

Pick up from hotels (Sabah Hotel or Sandakan Hotel) within Sandakan at 0800/0815 hrs or Sandakan Airport (BKI-SDK Malaysia Airlines MH2042 07:25/08:05 or AirAsia AK6080 07:05/07:50). Transfer to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center. At this world renowned center, come face to face with human's closest relative, the Orang Utans. Orang Utans share 97% of the same DNA as humans. The Orang Utans feeding time is at 1000 hrs. Also experience a walk in the tropical lowland dipterocarp forest.

While Orangutan rehabilitation is still the primary goal at Sepilok, present aims include public education on conservation, research and assistance to other endangered species such as captive breeding of the rare and endangered rhinoceros.

At 1100hrs, depart Sepilok and proceed to Sukau or Bilit either via land or boat or both.

Along the Kinabatangan River, Sabah's longest river, birdlife is especially rich here including eight species of hornbills, kingfishers, egrets, darters, owls, kites, eagles, broadbills, doves, storm storks, herons, hawks, ospreys, falcon, pheasants, parakeets, bee eaters, woodpeckers, pittas, bulbuls, forktails, babblers, warblers, flycatchers, orioles, flowerpeckers, spiderhunters, among others.

You may also come face to face with the the Borneon Pgymy Elephant bathing and playing by the river banks, endemic Proboscis monkeys as they settle down on treetops, Estuarine Crocodiles, and other wildlife.

Late afternoon, we will bring you to a river cruise, in search of more wildlife.

Dinner and overnight at lodge.

Night river cruise, to spot nortunal animal, can be arranged with additional surcharge.


Day 2 Sukau, Oxbow Lake (Optional Gomantong Cave) / Next Destination
(Breakfast, Lunch)
Early morning jungle walks along the trail or river cruise to the Oxbow / Pitas lakes (in Sukau). (Oxbow lake was formed by large meanders of the river that have been cut off from the main channel). The trip will take you to see the riverine forest, birds and the wildlife in the area.

The Oriental Darter, Storm's stork, various species of Hornbills, Kingfishers is common feature.

After morning walk/cruise, return to lodge for breakfast and proceed back to Sandakan via boat or land.

For those travelling overland back to Sandakan, an opportunity to visit the Gomantong Cave located within the Gomantong forest reserve. Explore the biggest bird's nest cave in Sabah. Gomantong Cave excursion may be subjected to additional surcharge.

On arrival in Sandakan, a brief Sandakan Sightseeing which may include a visit to one of the following highlights: -

  • Sandakan Memorial Park
    Located within the suburb of Taman Rimba, the site of a notorious WWII prisoner-of-war camp is about 11km outside of Sandakan.

    The park, which includes a small museum, is a memorial to the thousands of Australian and British who lost their lives during the Japanese occupation. The rusting remains of an excavator, a generator and a boiler lie in their original positions, near steps leading up to a small Commemorative Pavilion.

  • Buddhist Temple "Puh Jih Syh"
    Situated on the hilltop with a commanding view of Sandakan bay, built in 1987, this ornate temple is blazed with red and gold, with writhing dragons and gold gilded Buddha. It is said that the temple protects and brings prosperity to Sandakan community.

Lunch in a local restaurant before transfer to either hotel or airport for your flight (SDK-BKI Malaysia Airlines MH 2709 14:00/14:45 or AirAsia AK6093(AK6097) 14:20/15:05).

Recommended to bring:
Personal gear, insect repellent, raincoat, hat, and sunscreen. Use good walking shoes and comfortable cotton T-shirt, long sleeve shirt and long or short pant. Don't forget to bring camera and binocular.
