[I] 5D4N SUKAU/BILIT KINABATANGAN BIRDWATCHING & WILDLIFE SAFARI (ex Sandakan)

Accommodation: 02 nights Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge AND 02 nights Abai Jungle Lodge

Day 1 Sepilok Orangutan - Gomantong Caves - Sukau
(Lunch, Dinner)

Pick up from hotels (Sabah Hotel or Sandakan Hotel) within Sandakan at 0800/0815 hrs or Sandakan Airport (BKI-SDK Malaysia Airlines MH2042 07:25/08:05 or AirAsia AK6080 07:05/07:50). Proceed to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. Trek ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden plank walks to witness the feeding of the orangutans at 1000hrs and video show. After lunch we will continue our journey overland to Gomantong Caves, the largest bird's nests cave in Sabah, famous for its swiftlets and their edible nests. Stay on until around 06:00 p.m. At sundown, a spectacular exodus of thousands of Hawks bats can be observed as they leave the cave in search of food. Proceed to Sukau for a short briefing on the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary. Overnight at the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge.



Day 2 Oxbow Lake - Menanggul River Safari
(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Today we'll begin our search of the birds of the Lower Kinabatangan River in the tropical rainforest of Borneo. This area is well endowed with many species and we may see Crested Serpent's Eagle, Oriental Darter, Cinnamon Bittern, Storm's Stork, Bush crested & Wrinkled Hornbill, Yellow Rumped Flowerpecker, Dusky Munia and Malaysian Blue Flycatcher amongst others. Morning river cruise to the Oxbow Lake for a short jungle walk (if weather permits) through the lush riverine forest along the lake and then return to the lodge for breakfast. In the afternoon, venture on another river cruise with electric motor down the Menanggul River and along the Kinabatangan River, we could see: Blue-eared Kingfisher, Great Slaty Woodpecker and Cinnamon-rumped Trogon. Return to the lodge at dusk. Overnight at the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge.


Day 3 Safari Abai Night Cruise
(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Early morning we will explore the trail behind the lodge. After breakfast we will cruise down slowly searching different kind of birds along the Kinabatangan River. Species we will be looking for in particular are endemic to Borneo. Check in to Abai Jungle Lodge. After lunch, free to explore the nature board walk behind the lodge before taking another cruise in search of more wildlife and birds. After dinner, a night cruise leads us to witness the nature of fireflies lighting up as Christmas tree. Overnight at the Abai Jungle Lodge.


Day 4 Pitas Lake / Tree Planting
(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Early morning take a river trip to Pitas Lake to observe more birds, wildlife and experience the unique of Oxbow Lake. We could see: White-fronted Falconet, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Buffy Fish Owl, Bushy-crested, Wreathed, Asian Black, Oriental Pied, Fish Eagle, Blackheaded Munia, Storkbilled & Collared Kingfisher, Scarlet breasted & Orange bellied Flowerpecker and Green Imperial-Pigeon. After breakfast, an option to join a tree planting project with the local community. Overnight at Abai Jungle Lodge.


Day 5 Abai - Sandakan / Next Destination
(Breakfast, Lunch)

In the morning, we are free to view more birds/wildlife and enjoy a cup of coffee at our nature board walk. After breakfast, take another one hour boat cruise back to Sandakan. Upon arrival at jetty, drive up hill to the Puh Jih Syh Chinese Buddhist Temple, which offers a panoramic view of the Sandakan Bay before lunch at local restaurant or hotel. After lunch, transfer to either hotel or airport for your flight (SDK-BKI Malaysia Airlines MH 2709 14:00/14:45 or AirAsia AK6093(AK6097) 14:20/15:05).

Recommended to bring:
Personal gear, insect repellent, raincoat, hat, and sunscreen. Use good walking shoes and comfortable cotton T-shirt, long sleeve shirt and long or short pant. Don't forget to bring camera and binocular.
